Is your boat struggling to get on plane?
Hydro Shield – faster planing, better control and lower fuel consumption
Hydro Shield is built to help your boat get on plane faster, hold plane at lower speed, run more stable and give better control at low and medium cruising speeds.
These are the effects Hydro Shield is designed to deliver — and these are exactly the improvements many customers report after installation.

Hydro Shield is designed for faster planing, better control, lower planing speed and improved protection. Exact results vary depending on hull type, engine, propeller, trim, load and driving style.
Why does your boat struggle to get on plane?
When a boat does not lift efficiently during acceleration, it pushes heavily through the water instead of quickly rising up and gliding on top of it. That requires more throttle, higher RPM and more fuel.
Typical symptoms include a high bow, heavy stern, slow time to plane, porpoising, unstable handling and difficulty holding plane at lower speeds.
Hydro Shield is designed to improve these problems by adding lift, improving water flow and creating more stability directly at the engine.
How does Hydro Shield work?
Hydro Shield works as a hydrodynamic wing / underwater spoiler and is mounted on the skeg/fin below the propeller.
The wing works in the water flow from the propeller and the boat’s movement through the water. This creates extra lift and stability where many boats need it most: at the engine and stern.
When the engine is trimmed, the lifting force follows the trim angle. This helps the boat get on plane faster, hold plane at lower speed and run with better control.
Do you recognize any of these issues?
- The boat feels heavy and takes a long time to get on plane
- The bow rises too high during acceleration
- It takes too much throttle to keep the boat on plane
- The boat easily falls off plane at lower speed
- Fuel consumption is higher than expected
- Unstable handling at low speed
- Porpoising / bouncing in waves
What Hydro Shield is built to deliver
- Faster and easier planing
- Lower speed needed to stay on plane
- More stable and predictable handling
- Reduced porpoising / bouncing
- Better control in turns
- Better grip and response when trimming
- Better protection for the propeller and skeg
A boat that planes earlier and runs more stable can often be driven more efficiently. Many customers report lower fuel consumption at low and medium cruising speeds, especially when the boat previously ran heavy, carried a high bow or needed high RPM to stay on plane.
Hydro Shield does not replace the need for the right propeller, correct engine height or good weight distribution, but it helps the boat use the water flow more efficiently and reduces the heavy transition into plane.
The examples show what 5–8% lower fuel consumption can mean at cruising speed. Actual results vary between boats, engines, propellers, load, trim and driving style.
- The boat runs heavily during the transition to plane
- High bow during acceleration
- Higher RPM needed to maintain cruising speed
- Difficult to keep stable at low speed
- The boat easily falls off plane
- Porpoising / bouncing in light chop
- More trimming needed to keep balance
- Faster and more controlled planing
- Lower planing speed and better control
- More stable and smoother ride
- Reduced or eliminated porpoising
- Better response when trimming the engine
- Better control in turns
- Better protection of propeller and skeg
| Hydro Shield | Trim tabs | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | See current price on the product page | Often higher total price including installation |
| Installation | Usually 30–45 minutes | Often professional installation |
| Holes in the hull | No | Yes, usually in the transom |
| Mounting | Mounted on the skeg/fin below the propeller | Mounted on the transom |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Hydraulic or electric system |
| Planing | Very strong for faster planing and lower planing speed | Very strong for active trim correction |
| Propeller protection | Yes | No |
Hydro Shield and trim tabs are not the same solution. Trim tabs actively adjust the boat’s running angle, while Hydro Shield adds lift, stability and protection directly at the engine. For many boats, Hydro Shield is a simpler and less invasive way to achieve faster planing, lower planing speed and better control.
Will Hydro Shield fit your boat?
Hydro Shield fits many types of boats, outboard engines and sterndrive setups. The correct model depends on engine, drive, skeg/fin and boat size.
Not sure which model you need? Send us your boat model, engine details and preferably a photo of the drive/skeg — and we will help you choose the right Hydro Shield.
Will Hydro Shield affect top speed?
Most users experience about the same top speed. Some see slightly higher top speed due to more efficient running, while others mainly notice improvement in acceleration, planing, control and cruising speed.
Can Hydro Shield help with porpoising?
Yes. Hydro Shield is built to add more stability and lift at the engine, and many customers report that porpoising / bouncing is reduced or eliminated after installation.
Do I have to drill into the boat hull?
No. You do not drill into the hull. Hydro Shield is normally mounted with 3 bolts in the skeg/fin below the propeller. It is not mounted on the cavitation plate.
How long does installation take?
Installation usually takes around 30–45 minutes with normal tools. Always follow the official installation video/instructions, or let a workshop do the installation if you are unsure.
Is Hydro Shield made of steel?
No. The wing itself is made from strong special plastic/composite, with stainless steel brackets and bolts. This gives a strong, lightweight and practical solution for marine use.
Does Hydro Shield work on heavier boats and sterndrives?
Yes. Hydro Shield is also used on heavier boats, sterndrives and higher-powered engines. The correct model and correct installation are especially important on larger and heavier boats.
Is Hydro Shield the same as a normal hydrofoil?
No. Hydro Shield is more than a traditional hydrofoil. It is designed to improve planing while also giving practical protection for the propeller, skeg and drive/lower unit.
A simple upgrade many boat owners notice immediately
